Human Cannonball Freak

Rebrand callout answered with my proposal for the Brighton Fringe Festival brochure cover.  The Brief's objectives called for a design to include the theme Dive In and a 12 colour-code to distinguish the 12 types of venue/page-sections, and a flourish added to existing title logo, and that it must be all vector artwork -

I didn't get the callback I was banking on but hey maybe the marketing team might just pickup on my layout and well, in any case will have to wait till January's campaign reveal for my warm fuzzy feeling.

More recently, just last week in fact, I submitted this alternative film poster, see in context here with comments which makes for some interesting conversation about artistic license.

Anyway was the needed motivation to sort out me photoshop brushes.  Still it needs some atmospheric fog and the guard on the left needs a ground shadow, and maybe drop in a UFO, dunno, I haven't seen the movie.  Maybe I should, Bruce Dern plays the Icecream vanman.  Oh yeah!

Folk on Driftwood

One week to come up with series of 3 illustrations - rustic paint style for Magazine Editorial -
Done with sunburning days to spare!

Off-season Greetings

Norfolk Farmer goes 'Postal' !
Inspired by the movie: Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa Actor Colm Meaney's character.
He plays sacked radio DJ Pat Farrell who bear's a grudge and a shotgun siege ensues.  The final comic chase sequence goes off the deep end at Cromer Pier.

I was only wanting to practice on me photoshop brushwork because it was still January.

Roughlook

I have been experimenting on a newer style of illustrating, I'm aiming for a look that's rougher, brighter, fresher and more immediately aligned to commercial illustration needs -

They're small detail portions of A3-poster artwork I'm doing for the Brighton Science Festival 2017 which I will reveal in January.

Till next time, I wish you all a great Christmas and a prosperous new year.  And a big thanks for sticking with my occasional newsletters.

Shameless

Public Hanging on 13th Oct' at Horse & Groom pub, a lively venue presided over by Pat who invited me to exhibit my art posters along with 3 others, that's all I really know except i gotta prepare frames, sort out the printer and polish up some art -
Holy Smirk's first airing will hang defiant along side his disciples at least till the end of November.  Like my other rebellious ignomies, this is available as signed limited edition of 200 prints (size: A3).  I'll be clearing it with the Romans this week so if you wish to indicate your interest to order, this would clue me into how many I should print off initially.

Avatar couple

I landed the opportunity to 'photo-manipulate' an istock-photo given to me for the purpose of morphing these two happy faces into blue Avatar people - like in the movie.  The Client then put the finished job into context for an advertising poster campaign -

Well hung

The Great British Election of 6th May 2010 has now past into infamy.  We were all subjected to the media novelty of a TV debate direct from these three politician candidates, I beavered to complete this poster before the predictably inevitable outcome - to show how I see them.
Central to my artwork was capturing their character, to depict each in their own plaques shaped like a 50p coin with Traitors Gate - logo appears on all parliamentary business, and sitting at the top of each plaque is their own animist in animal form.

Featured allegorical themes are The dead Albatross (from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge) represents the peoples dashed hopes.

Britannia (bottom-right) is not with her trusty shield and trident but substituted with a wide-screen TV and camera, because now she's more representative of a self-important, bloated and embedded media.
The Devil (bottom-left) is the Taxman, or should that now be the Axeman, he's about to decapitate the corpsed Albatross thereby severing all collective memory of a time when our freedoms were inalienable.  Only thing in life is death and taxes.  I think this poster will grow on you the more its truths become self evident.  Till then and on a more jocular note, here's the translated Latin on the plaques, for -

David Cameron (Tory boy):
[Purgamentum init, exit purgamentum] 'Garbage in, garbage out'
[Recedite, plebes! Gero rem imperialem!] 'Stand aside plebians! I am on imperial business!'

Gordon Brown (Flash Gordon with one good eye):
[Sentio aliquos togatos contra me conspirare] 'I think some people in togas are plotting against me'
[Salvator Mundi] 'Saviour of the World'

Nick Clegg (who?):
[Vinum bellum iucunumque est, sed animo corporeque caret] 'It's a nice little wine, but it lacks character and depth'

Global financial crisis

Inspiration for this Fat Cat Stock Trader came while listening on the radio about the current economic depression' being potentially more serious than the crash of the 1920's. Apparently my super-safe triple 'A' junk billions are being re-securitized into a new financial instrument.  Its all exotic voodoo futures to me as I'm a very time-rich freelancer so have the luxury to wisely spend my valuable time keeping an eye on contemporary illustration trends and have noticed it's getting decidedly painterly in style and vogue.  So, not to be out-classed, I thought I would dash off this fine example.  Here's a close-up section, click it to see all 100% resolution -
Time spent working-up this portrait took me just 2 days and I consider it a 'self promo' piece.  Should you want my art like this done for your project needs then contact me via my webfolio: doodlingjim.com
